What is your student/teacher ratio?
Currently we have one teacher for every 3-4 students. The curriculum is planned by two native Swedish teachers with Swedish teaching degrees who also teach ALL students in language studies. Two experienced teaching assistants work with reading, projects and other subjects.
Where is the school ocated?
Our school is conveniently located in Vienna, VA in a recently renovated school annex owned by a neignborhood church. We have access to three sizeable classrooms (more can be added, if needed), and a cozy lounge for parents.
Do the students have outdoor recess?
Yes, almost always. We have a picnic table, a large grass lawn for the kids to play on and a mostly empty parking lot. Some classes and activities are also held outside, to help invoke the Swedish love of nature and the outdoors.
Does the school have a library?
Yes, we do. We have started building a respectable collection of books, films, CDs and magazines donated by friends and family in Sweden. We also share books and with each other at school.
Do I have to volunteer or donate money?
No. The program is financed by tuition and grants and is not run as a parent co-op. All administration and teaching is done by staff. We hope that you will participate by helping your child at home and attend our social and cultural activities because you enjoy being part of a Swedish-speaking community. Everyone, including teachers, takes turns bringing snacks. Parents are responsible for their own children during recess and need to get help from other parents if they cannot be there. (Although most parents enjoy the games too!)
Do you celebrate Lucia and other Swedish holidays?
Yes, absolutely. This year we will have our Lucia pageant and make Christmas crafts on December 11 in the church fellowship hall. During the school year we learn about various other Swedish customs and celebrations.
